CMI MUSIC ACADEMY

MUSIC INDUSTRY PRACTICE

Cape Music Institute (CMI) Music Industry Practice certificate program is a full time study for highly talented students 18 and above who reside in Cape Town and the greater South Africa. CMI targets school leavers, unemployed youth, and entrepreneurs from backgrounds under-represented in the South African performing arts industry. Qualified applicants must at least have two years of basic instrument experience and should demonstrate a high level of musical potential. Any persons wishing to make a career in the music industry are especially encouraged to apply. After two years of study students are ready for a third year London College of Music (LCM), Music Performance Diploma upon receiving their LCM Grade 5 theory.


COURSE PURPOSE

This qualification recognizes demonstrated core knowledge, skills, and competence in music areas of performance, composition, theory, and analysis and music industry. It enables the development of competencies and other related skills in music, and other performing arts sub-fields.  

Students who have completed this qualification will have the necessary competencies to enter the Music Industry at a professional level. The specific focus on worship leading in a church environment (optional) makes a student uniquely suited to the church environment.


ADMISSIONS POLICY

All applicants who wish to enroll in the Music Industry Practice (MIP) or Sound Production (SP) programs must submit a complete application form to the admissions office of PNXGLOBAL (Pneumatix).

Applicants whose completed application forms have been received will be scheduled for an audition in person before members of the audition panel.


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Learning assumed to be in place and recognition of prior learning.

It would be desirable for learners wishing to access the MIP qualification to competent at:

  • Language and communication at NQF4 (Matric/grade12)
  • Basic knowledge of scales
  • Basic understanding of chosen instrument
  • Prepared song or piece to be played in the audition

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES

  • Communicate in a variety of ways to achieve personal and music organizational needs and expectations
  • Use mathematics and mathematical thinking to solve every day problems for oneself, music organization and sector
  • Apply music knowledge
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the music industry
  • Perform on the chosen music instrument
  • Apply life and work skills in the music work place
  • Become an internal part of the church worship team with a capacity to develop as the worship leader.

DURATION OF COURSE

2 year Certificate (NQF Level 5-6)
3 year London College of Music Diploma NQF Level 6-7)

SOUND PRODUCTION

Qualified applicants must at least have one years of basic sound experience and should demonstrate a high level of musical potential. A need for competence at this level exists for sound engineering competencies across genres. The music industry requires competent individuals who have:

  • Reliable and robust knowledge and skills regarding sound technology,
  • Who can meet industry standards and requirements using technology to their best advantage.
  • Who are capable of delivering effectively with regard to sound engineering.
  • The composition of this qualification provides an integrated set of competencies to meet music industry sound technology needs.

The purpose of this qualification is thus that a qualified learner is able to meet specific industry requirements and adopt individual characteristics traits for operation in the field of sound engineering.

  • Prepared song or piece to be played in the audition (second instrument)
